Creating a Safe Sandbox for Generative AI Adoption in Universities

As universities navigate the AI Roadmap, libraries are often the first movers in providing AI literacy training for undergraduates and postgraduates.

However, a critical gap remains: after training, there is little visibility into how students apply these guidelines in real assignments.

At the same time, many faculty members remain hesitant, viewing generative AI as a risk rather than a resource.

This paper introduces PowerNotes as a sandbox approach, a controlled environment where students can engage with generative AI under the direct guidance of supervisors.

By linking literacy with supervised practice, the sandbox bridges trust gaps, ensures responsible use, and creates evidence that students are adhering to institutional guidelines. This model not only builds faculty confidence but also accelerates institutional readiness for AI adoption, positioning the library as a key enabler in shaping responsible, practical, and scalable AI use across the university.
